I worked as a full-time journalist for eight years and now freelance alongside my other writing work.

Emily Koch - young journalist of the year 2012

Picking up the award for Young Journalist of the Year 2012

I started off as a trainee reporter at the Bristol Post while I studied at Bristol University, later becoming the paper’s website editor and deputy news editor. I left the Post in 2014 to study for a masters degree in creative writing at Bath Spa University, and to finish my debut novel.

During my time at the Post I was named Young Journalist of the Year in the 2012 Regional Press Awards – won in part for an investigation revealing a violent former henchman of Robert Mugabe working in a Bristol care home.

The Bristol Post won website of the year at the EDF South West Media Awards 2013, and I was named Digital Journalist of the year at the same awards the following year, shortly before I left the paper.
